Dr Who inspired “Wibbly Wobbly” socks

This pattern is for advanced sock knitters or those with a good working knowledge of sock formation and short rows. Afterthought heel and kitchener stitch also used.

The pattern is written using magic loop on a circular needle but can easily be adapted for DPN’s. For conversion, the “front” will be needles 1 and 2, the “back” will be needles 3 and 4.

The sock is worked in short rows, split into working the “front” and turning and working the “back”. Even shaping is achieved by rotating the sock by 1/4 turn after each set of pattern.

image

Materials required:

2.5mm circular needle
100g (400m) your choice of sock yarn (I used my own “11th’s Interior” – check out my Etsy shop for some great Dr Who inspired colourways.
Darning needle for grafting.

Abbreviations:

K – knit
P – purl
SOR – start of round
St(s) – stitch(es)
Tbl – through back loop
W&T – wrap and turn – this is the method used in this pattern, however, you are free to use whichever you prefer.

Cuff
Cast on 72sts, place SOR markers, join in the round and work 10 rows in 1 x 1 twisted rib (k1tbl,  p1)

Leg

Pattern round:
Part 1: (worked on front sts – needles 1 and 2 for DPN’s) – *k8 W&T, p6 W&T, (pick up wraps as they appear) repeat from * across 36 sts.  Row will end when you k8 and W&T into 37th st. With ws facing, purl to SOR marker, picking up all wraps.
Part 2: (worked on back sts), with ws facing, *p8 W&T, k6 W&T, repeat from * across 36sts. Row will end when you p8 and W&T into 36th st (from opposite side) NB. REMEMBER TO PICK UP THE WRAPPED 37TH ST FROM PART 1. With rs facing, knit to SOR marker, picking up all wraps.

Remove SOR marker and k18, this forms the quarter turn, place SOR. You will now work on the remaining 18 front sts and 18 sts from the “back”, these will become the new “front” sts with the remaining sts becoming the new “back”.

Repeat part 1 and 2 of pattern row. Remembering to wrap the end sts of opposite rows and picking up all wraps.

Remove SOR and, again, k18, replace SOR marker and commence both part 1 and 2 of pattern row (the observant amongst you will note you are working on the original “back” sts, the turns now mean these are front sts.

Continue in pattern set, rotating by a quarter (18sts) after each full completion of part 1 and 2.

After four turns, you will have completed a full rotation.  Continue as set to make the leg as long as you require. To ensure proper shaping, it is important to complete full rotations before shaping the heel. An afterthought or FLK heel works well with this pattern.

Once the heel has been worked, continue in pattern as set to complete foot length.

Toe shaping:

Working in straightforward stocking stitch:

Rd1: k1, ssk, k to 3sts before end of “front sts”, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to 3sts before end of “back” sts, k2tog, k1
Rd2: knit

Repeat last two rounds until 36sts remain, break yarn leaving a long tail and graft together toe using kitchener stitch.
