“Look at the sky. It’s not dark and black and without character. The black is, in fact deep blue. And over there: lighter blue and blowing through the blues and blackness the winds swirling through the air and then shining, burning, bursting through: the stars!”
This pattern is written for top down magic loop but can easily be knit using DPNS, and would also work toe up, though the effect will be slightly different.
The pattern is an interpretation of thd Van Gogh quote about. A simple twisting rib replicates the swirling winds while tiny star stitches adorn the side borders and the silver stellina in the yarn, whilst not “bursting through” adds a little shine.

Cuff
Cast on 72sts, join in the round and work 10 rows twisted rib.
Leg
Rds 1-3: k
Rds 4-28: Work one repeat of of star pattern
Rds 28-38: k
Commence “swirling winds” pattern and continue in pattern as set until sock is approximately 1.5″ shorter than desired length for a “flap” heel or 1″ shorter than desired length for an afterthought or FLK heel (the model is shown with FLK heel).
Heel shaping
As detailed above, this sock lends itself to most forms of heel shaping, feel free to use your preferred method. The heel shaping is worked on 36sts only.
Foot
Continue working in pattern set from leg, working pattern only on the front of the sock, work until sock is 1.5″ shorter than desired length.
Toe shaping
Rd1: *k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of front needle, k2tog, k1, repeat from * across back needle sts.
Rd2: k
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 36sts remain. Break yarn leaving a long tail and graft toe sts using Kitchener stitch.
Dampen, block, wear, enjoy.
